DIPLOMA PROJECT PROPOSAL FEBRUARY 1 - 2010

Diploma Project proposal - 2010

Name: Himanshu Sharma

Course: Visual Communication Design

Brief:

Create a design research journal of Mainpal.

Need:

To explore the soul and trends of Manipal for repositioning Manipal as the new age Nalanda a education epicenter:

Idiom had created the brand Manipal. Manipal 2.0 is being repositioned by Idiom with help of designs, architects, film makers, communication designers. Various teams and projects formed Manipal in terms of

  • Place making / destination making of Manipal town
  • The brand 2.0
  • Communication and events
  • Community and infrastructure development.

In this process I realized that there is need of a research journal that will help the large team to:

  • Generate ideas
  • Develop future scenarios
  • Develop concepts
  • Plan and direct the communication and development to achieve the right results.

The journal will help the team in a big way by documenting data and the designs

in form of a both visual and numerical.

As a designer I feel that I can use my design skills and design a book journal which can capture the soul and beat of Manipal as is.

Why a research journal?

It’s a visual directory a trend map, Manipal research journal will help me to:

  • Improve observation and documentation skills
  • Improve design thinking skills
  • Develop problem solving techniques
  • Apply theory to practice
  • Generate ideas/enhance creativity
  • Improve communication skills
  • Explore and experiment with ideas
  • Make creative links to develop own reasoning
  • Make your processes visible and track your thinking through each unit
  • In later projects

Research questions:

· Why keep a research journal?

· How well can the journal be useful to the team?

· How can the journal be able to communicate the right messages for idea generation?

· How can the journal be interpreted in a data both visual and numerical?

· How can we culturally map a place and give it the personality of a living being?

· How can I help scenario building for a problem?

· How can I discuss the team for how to make different best layout of pages of book?

· How can I project Manipal keeping in mind the core values of Manipal?

· How best I can capture the sensibility of Manipal?

· What is the best way to communicate for a book journal?

· How can I make the book/s more interesting?

Approach / Process:

There are three stages for processing of the book journal.

1. Collecting data/information

  • Collect information and data from the various teams who have worked and are working on Manipal
  • Study the collected information and data and identify the useful information

(Techniques, theory, approaches, ideas etc)

  • Documenting regularly
  • Initial ideas
  • Thoughts and feelings on the data
  • Feedback from the teammates
  • Make sense of ideas
  • Record the progress at each stage.

2. Designing the book

· Finalizing style/layout of the book.

· After selecting, designing a dummy brief book to show it to team. How they interest?

· Check with the team and see my research `

· I can do the changes after many interactions at all stages of making/designing

the journal.

3. Production of the book

· Select the paper and the print technique

· Check the cost of printing the book.

· Review the proofs.

Material / Resources:

  • Books:

Look at example of research journals

Travel blogs and photo diaries.

  • Information on designing Manipal’s journal.
  • Materials:

Printing technique to be used

Quality of paper

Money for printing

Computer

Drawing Materials and paper

Camera

Scanner

Learning outcomes:

· Reassemble something a different way.

· I will understand to how to design different layout of the journal.

· I will learn to put theory into practice.

· How to document visual and data and make sense of the data.

· It will teach me design thinking and sense making.

· Concepts of research journal will be clear,

· Process of selecting useful data and identify the data useful for the journal

I will learn how to design a book based on the information on town and express its soul.

· To get a deeper understanding of the process of designing the book from idea stage to the final print stage.

· To strengthen my skills of visual graphics using illustrations and photograph

· Making links between ideas (scenario building)

· Selection

· Openness to new ideas/change

· Problem solving
